Reflection Task 3

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE - the man of the year

I choose Justin Timberlake because he is really a nice, kind and helpful man. He makes a lot of donations. He has been active in several charitable pursuits. Firstly when he was in the band 'N Sync's, he was involved in “Challenge for the Children" activity. In 2001, he founded the "Justin Timberlake Foundation". The foundation initially funded music education programs in schools. However, now it has a much broader agenda.
In October 2005, the Grammy Association presented Timberlake with an award for his humanitarian efforts in Tennessee.
In November 2007, he donated $100,000 from takings from his Australian tour to Wildlife Warriors founded by Steve Irwin.
On March 23, 2008, he donated $100,000 to the Memphis Rock N' Soul Museum and another $100,000 to the Memphis Music Foundation.
On November 12, 2007, Timberlake became the host of the tour's Las Vegas tournament which will start in 2008. With Timberlake's agreement to host the tournament, its name was changed to the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

He played in the celebrity pro-am on the day before the competitive tournament and hosted a charity concert during the week of the tournament. The activity was a success, and was repeated in 2009. According to a survey, Justin Timberlake's s estimated worth to Shriners Hospital for Children, reaped $9,262,381 for 2009 -which sets the world record for the Biggest support for charity.
Justin donated an item to watchmaker Nixon to be made into a watch, the sale of which benefitted the MusiCares MAP Fund — a pool of resources set aside to address addiction and recovery needs of members of the music community.
Timberlake teamed up with REM’s Michael Stipe for a charity single to continue aid for Hurricane Katrina victims. The CD, In the Sun, is available for purchase on iTunes.
Timberlake was awarded the Big Help award for his charity work at the 2011 Kids’ Choice Awards held at the USC Galen Center in Los Angeles.

Reflection Task 2b

The video is about Durian fruit. It gives us information about the fruit. Durian fruit is a green, spiky fruit. The inside color is yellow. If we want to eat one, we should peel it off. However, I'm not sure if you can dare to taste it! Many people are put off by its smell. Because of its bad smell, it is banned from public transportation, hotels. There is a really huge bill for those carrying a durian in subway. . I think it is really weird! I really wonder how it smells like. How bad could it be??  I searched it on the internet, and I found a comment saying it smells at first like rotten onions. I have never smelt rotten onion. So, I still don’t know it..
Apart from its smell, I guess its taste is not very good as well. The speaker says many tourists don't like it much.  On the other hand, South Asian people really like it. They even call it ‘the king of the fruits’. Maybe that’s because the Europeans have only known it for about 600 years while southeastern Asia people have known and consumed it since prehistoric times. In 2222, maybe Europeans would love it so much! We don’t know…

I’m surprised at its varieties. There are 30 types of durian. The orchard where the speaker goes is really big. The speaker says these durian trees’ seeds were from the trashes of the rich. According to that, I understand durian is an expensive and rare fruit in the past. However, I have never seen durian in Turkey. I think there are not many people knowing about durian. But, I want to try it one day.

Reflection Task 2a

Facebook
I chose this topic because I think it is a current and controversial issue. I don't think Facebook is something dangerous or something must be avoided. However, most of the Facebook users don't use it wisely. For example, I think Facebook should be a place where we contact with our friends, share our memories and ideas. Some people see it as a dating site. They are trying to find girl or boy friends. Secondly, they don’t pay attention to privacy. We see all the things these people do, where they go, what they eat or drink. They even make gossip on comments. At least, they can send messages from Facebook but they prefer to do it openly.
Thirdly, everything has become virtual. We have virtual friends. For example, we are Facebook friends with people whom we don’t know who he is or whom we haven’t even say hello in real life. Thirdly, people upload their photos on Facebook and they want other people to like their photos. They even compete with each other. They send messages like ‘will you please like my photo? , If you like my photo, I will like yours.’ I think it is nonsense! If I really like your photo, I will like it on Facebook without seeing a request from you. I think it is caused by lack of self-confidence and personality problems. People want to be accepted and liked by others. If they are not approved by the others, they don’t want to share their ideas or photos. Lastly, people share their all information on Facebook. I don’t think it is so reliable. However, if we be careful, Facebook can be a useful and entertaining social network. Facebook is not a bad thing but it is all depends on how you see it and how you use it!

Reflection Task 1b

James Vincent McMarrrow

I'm not sure if you have heard of his name or not. He is an Irish singer and songwriter.

 Bio
He was born in 1983.He began his musical life when he was a teenager. Initially , he was a drummer. He picked up a guitar at 19 and began writing songs and searched into the music of the 1970s singer/songwriter era, especially female artists, because of the pitch of his own voice. He began playing and singing in local pubs. He decided to record an album and moved into a small house on Ireland's coastline. He made his debut album Early in the Morning in 2010. The full-length album was released by Believe Recordings in Ireland in March of 2010, and was greeted with very encouraging reviews, a Choice Music nomination, platinum sales, and appearances at Royal Festival Hall and on Later with Jools Holland . The album was released in the U.S. later that year on Vagrant.  The popularity of the cover led to an expanded version of his debut being released with the song included, as well as an acoustic rendition of "We Don't Eat."

I really love his voice. He has a smooth, soft voice. Here a song of him: Wicked Game . If you like this kind of music, I think you will like this song. His genres are alternative, ethnic/folk, indie.

He will release a new album "Post Tropical" on 10 January 2014 . Currently, he is performing in renowned music clubs and performance halls. Here some of his concert dates:

a poem

I’d Rather

I’d rather wash the dishes
I’d rather kiss a frog.
I’d rather get an F in math
or run a ten-mile jog.
I’d rather do my homework.
I’d rather mow the lawn.
I’d rather take the garbage out.
I’d rather wake at dawn.
I’d rather dine on Brussels sprouts
or catch the chicken pox.
I’d rather do most anything
than clean the litter box.
